Doing the paperwork

Santa Fe has lots of home-based businesses, from hair stylists to massage therapists.

But keep in mind that operating a business of any size within the city limits, including one out of your home, requires a business registration/license from the city.

To obtain this license, first go to City Hall (200 Lincoln Ave.), to the Santa Fe Inspections and Enforcement Office, in the basement. Pick up the packet for a Certificate of Occupancy.

Inspectors from the Building Inspections Division, Zoning Inspection (both at 955-6646) and the Fire Prevention Bureau (955-3114) must pay you a visit. Once inspections are complete, the applicant is notified by the inspection office to turn in applications and fees.

While in City Hall, go to Room 112, the accounts receivable office. Pick up the application for a CRS Identification Number (also known as the Gross Receipts Tax Number for New Mexico). The phone number is 827-0951. This is the office that distributes the business registration/license application. For standard businesses, the cost is $35, and after inspections have been completed and paperwork accepted, a license will be mailed within five days.

In addition to the above requirements, if you are interested in opening a restaurant, you will need a food purveyor's permit from the state Environment Department, No. 4 Calle Medico (827-1840). This application includes a host of requirements concerning event-sponsoring, being a vendor or exhibitor and alcohol-licensing procedures. v
