Fifty years after Sputnik became the world’s first artificial satellite, a new race is under way with the finish line on the moon. NASA, the former lunar champion, already is predicting defeat.

Kindergarten teacher is raising money to teach children about math, science

Susan McIntosh didn’t wait. She formed a nonprofit in 2001 that sends retired teachers into the Santa Fe Public Schools to help teach hands-on science to elementary-school kids.

She teaches kindergarten by day and raises money for the nonprofit at night.

from The New Mexican Tularosa resident digs up old bones in front yard

TULAROSA — A contractor digging up a yard in Tularosa to find a leak in a sprinkler system found old bones instead.

The human remains, estimated to be up to 4,000 years old, were discovered earlier this month about 4 feet down in the front yard. The home’s owner, Bill Turner, called police, who contacted the Otero County sheriff, who called the medical examiner in Alamogordo.
