Fair offers shows, music

The Santa Fe County Fair continues through Sunday, with exhibits and events each day this week.

An opening ceremony for 4-H and FFA exhibitors and their parents is set for tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the show ring. On Thursday, events include a rabbit show at 1 p.m., a dairy goat show at 2 p.m., and a swine show at 5 p.m. all in the show ring, and exhibits from noon to8 p.m. in Exhibit Hall.

Exhibit Hall is scheduled to be open from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and from9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Friday shows include poultry at 8 a.m., sheep at 9 a.m., meat goats at 11 a.m., cattle at 1:30 p.m., dairy cattle at3:30 p.m. and a 4-H dog show at 6 p.m. A Round Robin Grand Champion Showman contest at 7 p.m. will top of the day of shows. The day wraps up with a dance from 7:30 until 11:30 p.m.

Saturday events include a llama show at 9 a.m., a herding dog demonstration at 10 a.m., a chili challenge at 11 a.m., a salsa contest and a livestock auction at 2:30 p.m. Saturday’s lineup includes music and dancing throughout the day from 9 a.m. until midnight.

Sunday’s schedule starts with a Sabbath service at 8:30 a.m., an old-timers livestock show at 9 a.m., a small-pet show at 10 a.m., an 11 a.m. chili challenge, a craft demonstration at 1 p.m., a watermelon-eating contest at 1:30 p.m. and traditional music and dance from11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The fairgrounds is at 3229 Rodeo Road.


Flea market set at the Village

The Village at Eldorado flea market resumed last weekend and will continue until the weather turns bad, said village developer Stacey Crossingham.

The flea market is held on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon in the north parking lot, near Brumby’s. Spaces are $20 a day. For more information, call 820-1117.


A Western story at Vista Grande

Eldorado author Johnny Boggs is scheduled to talk about his most recent book, Northfield: A Western Story, at 7 p.m. Aug. 16 at the Vista Grande Public Library.

Boggs plans to read from his book, discuss his research and offer autographed copies.


Ice-cream social benefits library

The 8th annual Vista Grande Public Library ice-cream social and silent auction is set for Aug. 26 from 1 to 5 p.m. This year’s event will be the first on the newly redesigned community patio behind the Eldorado Community Center.

A $6 ticket buys all the ice cream one might care to eat. Tickets are available in advance at the library. The event is a main source of income for the library, 14 Avenida Torreon in Eldorado.
