What is the search 'score'?

Score is calculated by an algorithm that weights the rarity of the words you use in your search query, across our entire database of news articles. You may find it helpful in deciding which results of a search are most likely to be the ones you want.

For example, Sweeney and Indian are fairly common, but combining those two with Scheick, the name of an archaeologist, would give the story "Early Indian site found in downtown dig" a much higher score.

There is no maximum score, because the score depends on the number (and rarity) of the words you search for.
