Founded in 1849 and the oldest newspaper in the West, The New Mexican covers the communities of the North-Central part of the state, achieving a 61% daily household penetration rate in the market area and 63% on Sundays.

The New Mexican owns and operates its own printing press, located in a modern building at One New Mexican Plaza off Mutt Nelson Road near Cerrillos Road and I-25. The New Mexican's administrative, editorial and advertising offices are at 202 East Marcy Street, currently being remodeled for re-occupancy sometime in the summer of 200. (In the mean time, temporary quarters are at 1368 Cerrillos Road.) The New Mexican has been in its downtown location since the mid-1940s.

Editor and publisher Robin M. Martin assumed leadership of The New Mexican in August 2001, upon the death of her father, Robert M. McKinney.

Robert McKinney first bought the paper in 1949, sold it to the Gannett chain, then, after a protracted breach-of-contract legal battle, resumed ownership of the paper in 1989.

New Mexico-born and Princeton-educated editor/publisher Martin resides in a rural village 20 miles north of Santa Fe; she is also owner/publisher of the award-winning weekly Taos News.

Other key personnel include Ginny Sohn, associate publisher; Julieta Garcia,Financial Vice President; Al Waldron, Operations Director (including press); Joe Vigil, advertising director; Rob Dean, managing editor; Rick Forepaugh, circulation director;  Robert Romero, controller, and Jeff Norris, information technologies and production director.

Over 200 full-time and part-time employees work at The New Mexican. We also contract with numerous freelance writers and graphic designers. Home-delivery carriers and street vendors are independent contractors.
