I don't remember where I got the DVD, it might have been Smith's in one of their old budget DVD bins.
I was looking for it last week so I could show my daughter's friends what a star I am, but I didn't find it. That means it's time to clean the house, or the kids rooms, where it's probably buried under piles of stuff.

Vanessa, when the paratroopers started to drop, there's one very fast moving scene where I pull a girl out of the yellow bug. I was very happy when I got the movie on DVD so I could freeze frame on that part.
There's another scene where I'm in the back of a truck as the mayor's car turns toward the Serf. Thanks to the miracles of movie making, I'm in front of the bank as a guard just 10 seconds later. I came like that close to being one of the book burners, except that I was a "paratrooper" and not "infantry."
I also was the officer in charge of the raodblock the kids had to get past after they got their supplies. I had to act like I got shot in the leg as I dove into a ditch.
One scene that got cut out of the movie was where Bella walked out of the Castadena hotel to see his dead troops. Me and another guy practiced snapping to attention as they walked by. We did that on our own, after all you have lots of time between takes. We were told that the producer and directors commented that we looked real good on camera, but that scene didn't make the final movie. |

This is as good a place as any to post this:
Did anybody else read about the historic building on the corner of Grand and Lincoln in Las Vegas that collasped?
It's near and dear to me because when they filmed Red Dawn in Las Vegas, there is a scene where Jennifer Grey comes out of the building just before it blows up. Well, the camera pans on me as an extra before it goes to the actors who do their lines just prior to the bomb going off.
In the scene where they track the kids in the snow on Johnson Mesa, I'm the first one to get shot. Off camera, John Milius points this great big .45 at me and boom, he shoots, bam I drop.
Rent the movie, tell me how my acting was! |

I wrote a letter to the SFPS superintendent this morning, as a concerned former student of the SFPS system. The following is a copy of the letter that I wrote. I am looking for allies in this fight for the funding of the arts, so if you believe you can help, please e-mail me withyour thoughts/suggestions @ nashbaug@nmsu.edu
Hello there Dr. Carpenter, I am writing you with a specific concern, as a am sure most of your writers do. However, I am hoping that this concern will come as a shock, being that it is coming from a dis-satisfied Graduate of the SFPS system. I graduated from Capital High in 2003, and have since been pursuing my studies in Music Education at NMSU. In my time here, I have learned a lot of what I expected to learn, but there have been some suprisingly enlightening experiences as well. My eyes have been opened to the poor level of opportunity I was given in my studies throughout the SF Public Schools. In light of these experiences, I have started to pay attention to differences in educational philosophies from city to city, and state to state. The schools here in Las Cruces aren't the best in the nation by any means, but they are well on their way. Besides an increase in funding, one thing that has been done down here is the installment of a Coordinator of Music for the L.C. Public Schools. I am aware that this has been done in Santa Fe, but this cannot have a positive effect unless the position is raised to full-time. This is the key to success. The problem isn't characteristic of Santa Fe alone, as I now know that this is a Nation-wide problem that needs to be addressed. I have become more and more disturbed at the fact that the funding for the arts in schools all across the nation is being cut. Some school systems are already making progress toward certain benefits. These benifits don't only benifit the arts. The school systems which support the arts reap enormous economical benifits as well.
Some specific Food for thought: At a middleschool in Wisconsin, VH1's "save the music" program awarded a 25,000$ grant to a school that was forced to decline the offer, since there was no full-time music teacher employed there. I know that the middle schools in Santa Fe have already stooped to this level. And yet the school board wonders why the High School music programs have dwindling interest... you must remember where High School Students come from--MIDDLE SCHOOL.
This is just the tip of the iceberg. I have prepared a full presentation to address the school board as a whole--I thought I would write first, to see if I can gain any allies in this fight, so if this idea seems amusing to you, please respond soon. Thanks, and have a wonderful day. Nathaniel C. Ashbaugh

Good Day New Mexico! I am a Key Production Accountant in the Film Industry, one of my many jobs is to produce weekly and final Cost Reports for the film. I see that monies are spent in the local community during prep/shoot/wrap. This amount is quite substantial. I am looking forward to becoming a resident of your beautiful state sometime this year so I too will be concerned where money is spent. It is not necessary to bankroll a production, the funds will come from outside investors/banks/bonding companies if well known Talent is attached to the project. Although incentives are attractive to Producers.
In reference to a comment below about actors not spending "big bucks" earned in New Mexico. No, that most likely won't happen unless they fall in love with it and buy property to live there as some do. The actors salaries go to their Business Manager/Agent or their Corporations. However, the entire Cast and Crew does spend their weekly Per Diem on location. Money is spent locally on Lodging, Car/Truck rentals, Office Supplies, Film Processing, Catering, Craft Service-(daily munches for set) Local Equipment purchases and rentals, Local Wardrobe purchases, Hair-Make Up supplies. Truly the majority of the production budget is spent on location except for those who are brought in, they usually bank their salaries until they see wonderful purchases to buy in New Mexico. And there are a lot more in your beautiful state than some of the others. Happy Filming!

I saw a movie this weekend that was a pleasant surprise! It was totally entertaining and amazed me that the actors in it were as good as they were. Namely; The Matador. Pierce Brosnan and Greg Kinear starred and both were good and believable in their parts; bearing in mind the fairly improbable premise. All in all, simply great fun. |

| Jack Clift |

You see, I bought a pair of 300 Gig drives to set up a mirror on this stupid PC. (I can't imagine that I'd want to recover all those boxes of ripped CDs.)
along about the end, well, after 250 some Gigabytes, I was into music of local artists that weren't listed on CDDB or Gracenote, or the one that Microcruft keeps. So I did a google search for Jack Clift hoping to find a page with an album cover on it.
I found that Jack Clift had been fired from Santa Fe's "Music in the Plaza" program. Now Jack Clift is a weird young fellow, a guitarist who has a tendency to hop up and down as he plays. It looks like he is playing guitar on a pogo-stick. But I first met him while he was playing for "Orange Blossom Special" a C&W dance band which is very famous up here in Northern New Mexico. The search brought up this link.
http://www.freenewmexican.com/news/1836.html
That [] upset me somewhat. So I did what was necessary to be able to comment on the stupidity of what had happened (a couple of years earlier, while I was out driving 18-wheelers around the country.
And that brings us up to today. Remember, this all started because I couldn't find an album cover for Jack's 1993 album. Thanks to "The New Mexican" for finding the link I need for "On a bright, bright morning".
For some reason Jack and his friends call their type of slow soft music (with some rock&roll drums) "Alternative Folk". They are the only ones who know what that means. It sounds like folk music with some surprises thrown in every so often.
In fact, it's a lot like "Cowboy Junkies" except that Jack doesn't sound like Margo Timmins. He does have a little Jack Palance or Mel Torme in his voice. That wasn't there on the first album, but he's a bit older these days. No more pink hair, none of those old "Blind 'em with the appearance, and then you can get through their ears to their heart..." stuff.
So, I downloaded the three albums on the site that the New Mexican referenced, burned an mp3 disk, and listened to it. It was all 128k stuff, so it will be much better on a disc. And it looks like I can buy two of the three plus the cover so I can buy three new Jack Clift CDs. (I don't live close enough to come hear him play at Fiestas. You twits did invite him to play at Fiestas, didn't you?)
Just ask him to play some of his songs off his albums. They are soft and sweet, and you will not regret it. As for me, my money is in the mail. I think that tells you how much I like his music. But, I've never bought an Opera disc, so that should tell you a little about how I choose. I would have been driven off the Plaza by Opera Music, (or John Phillip Sousa, for that matter.) I listen to a lot of Alison Krauss, Linda Ronstadt, Laurianne Fiorentino, and Orange Blossom Special, and of course, Lawyers, Guns, & Money... (Love it when the Judge plays that pedal steel...). |

Bill understands it perfectly well, Steve. But this is a public forum and in public Bill will never admit the obvious if it even remotely suggests that this administration was wrong. Period. End of story.
Saddam had nothing to do with 9/11 - the CIA has admitted it - even Bush has admitted it. He keeps lamely bringing up the "lessons of 9/11" as a nicely vague way of linking the two, but you notice that Cheney hasn't mentioned those mushroom clouds in a long, long time.
Those WMDs were long gone by the time we went in. Saddam refused bin Laden's request to establish a base in Iraq. Those are the facts, but Bill and his dust throwers will keep bringing them up over and over to deflect attention from the disastrous results of this invasion for America as if there really was something left in those issues to discuss.
There isn't. Bush was wrong. They just can't stand to admit it. |

I don't think we had any business attacking Peru after Pearl Harbor and we didn't. Peru had nothing to do with Pearl Harbor. For the same reason, I don't think we had any business attacking Iraq after 9-11, but we did. Iraq had nothing to do with 9-11. Just what part of that did you not understand, Bill? |
|
By Bill Green (Submitted: 08/15/2005 8:52 pm)

So, you think we should have attacked Peru after Pearl harbor, Steve? Where is the connection? Is there something you know and aren't telling us about Peru?
But seriously, I have seen several programs on the History Channel about this raid, and the Rangers and Alamo Guards that participated are true heroes in every sense of the word. The movie appears to follow the facts fairly closely and should be seen by all. |
