(disclosure: Mr Dill is an employee of the Santa Fe New Mexican) Guitarist/oudist/sarodist/improvisor Mustafa Stefan Dill is a native and current resident of New Mexico, where his earlier work - an intense and unique convergence of traditional flamenco elements and modern free improvisation - seems to well reflect the charged and dramatic landscapes of the Desert Southwest.
A guitarist for over 30 years, he earned a Masters degree in composition from the
New England Conservatory in Boston, studying composition and improvisation with Joe Maneri. He has performed in solo concerts throughout Europe since 1992 in both improvised music and guitar circles, earning strong acclaim for both concerts and recordings. His solo appearances include such venues and festivals as the FMP Total Music Meeting ( Berlin 1994), Zuid Nederlands Jazz Festival (Eindhoven 1995), Nickelsdorf concert season (1995, 1998), International Guitar Festival of Great Britain ( Wirral 1997), Paderborn Gitarrenfest (Paderborn 1998), V Festival Hispanoamericano de Guitarra (Tijuana, 1998), Erlbach (2002) and many others. He has performed with artists such as Cecil Taylor (special invitation as part of the Ensemble, Knitting Factory, May 1996), Guus Janssen (Eindhoven 1995), and others.
In 1995 the American modern classical label Centaur Records released the live solo CD
Warning Clothed in Bright Robes of Dawn to strong reviews; a second solo CD
Sangre Del Rio was released in early 1998, equally well recieved and reflecting a deeper flamenco involvement. In 2000, Dill returned to the electric guitar and Zerx Records released "Flower and Song", a collection of improvised duos with various partners, with Dill on electric and acoustic guitars. He also launched the high energy purely improvising "post-fusion/freejazz/metal" Mustafa Stefan Dill Trio, with Dave Wayne (drums) and Dave Nielsen (bass), featuring both acoustic and electric textures on their CD
Run For Heaven. His last recording was 2004's
Six Peaces, an acoustic release of oud and guitar.
2004 saw a nearly exclusive concentration on the oud and the sarod, and the development of the Sama'Trio and Sama' Duo as the principal groups. 2005 will see this path continue, and also a slight return to the electric guitar - this time in a fretless version.
